Why it matters
The Dubai desert is home to Arabian oryx, sand gazelle, foxes, falcons and a complex dune ecosystem. Unregulated off-road driving, litter and overcrowded safari zones cause lasting damage. The UAE takes desert conservation seriously with protected reserve zones and operator licensing.
What responsible operators do
- Operate only in licensed safari zones with DTCM permits
- Use regulated vehicle tracks rather than random dune driving
- Carry out all waste from the camp
- Employ local guides and camp staff
- Participate in animal welfare standards for camels and falcons
What you can do as a visitor
- Choose operators with a DTCM license
- Take all rubbish out of the desert including cigarette ends
- Photograph, do not touch: desert plants, reptiles and ground nests are easily disturbed
- Respect camel and falcon welfare standards
The conservation reserve
The Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve (DDCR) is 225 square kilometres of protected desert where Arabian oryx, sand gazelles and other native species have been reintroduced. Entry requires a specific permit. Our Luxury safari operates within this reserve.
FAQ
Is dune bashing harmful to the desert?
Standard dune bashing in licensed safari zones: managed and low-impact by regulated operators. Illegal off-road driving outside licensed zones: genuinely harmful to the dune ecosystem.
Are the camels treated well?
At reputable camps: yes. Camels have rest periods, are not overburdened and are handled by experienced staff.
How do I know if my safari is responsible?
DTCM license, operations in licensed safari zones, a named camp on your voucher, and operators who can answer questions about waste management and staff practices.
